Mobile Sites from The Web Orchard

Submitted by infosol on Mon, 11/08/2008 - 15:40.

Smart phones such as the iPhone and Blackberry are becoming increasingly popular and often come with unlimited data packages allowing people to easily access the Internet from their phone. These devices have smaller screens and current websites often display poorly, organisations are increasingly investing in optimised versions of their sites especially for mobiles.

Mobile optimised templates often strip out fancy graphics, flash, tables and multiple columns so that your content is easier to read on a smaller screen. The Web Orchard can add a mobile optimised template to your existing site. We can then automatically redirect mobile traffic to your mobile optimised template so that the end user gets the best experience from your website.

You can view a mobile optimised website at m.imafish.co.uk on your smartphone.

Mobile sites start from £400 for existing Drupal sites.

CAR GIANTS HIRE SMALL SHROPSHIRE BUSINESS FOR SAFETY WEBSITE

Submitted by infosol on Fri, 06/06/2008 - 15:25.

A SMALL internet design company in Shrewsbury has just completed a piece of business for some of the most famous car manufacturers in the world.

The Web Orchard has designed a business website for use by Aston Martin, Honda and Nissan.

Since the online launch a few weeks ago, Jaguar and Land Rover have also signed up to it.

The technical website allows car companies to make sure that their suppliers and products - which run to many thousands across the world – adhere to a strict regulation on chemicals and their safe use implemented by the European Union last year.

Nathan Bensley-Edwards, one of the founders of The Web Orchard, which is based at The Pumphouse on Coton Hill, said: “Over the coming years this regulation will have big implications for all manufacturers in Europe.

“The website www.auto-reach.com has been designed as a communication tool for the companies within the supply chain. It allows companies to make links with their suppliers and customers securely and confidentially.

“As a small company, it has been a great opportunity for us. We were obviously thrilled to be awarded the work by such global brand names, and we hope that it shows other businesses that it’s not necessary to hire major online service companies to carry out such work. It can be handled by a small enterprise such as ourselves in Shrewsbury.”

The business came the way of The Web Orchard through its work for the environmental consultancy Enviros.

Will Martin, Senior Consultant at Enviros, said: “The Web Orchard has produced an excellent, versatile communication tool in Auto-REACH to support our clients’ compliance strategy with the REACH Regulation. This work was carried out against a challenging time frame, but the end result has been a great success.”

The Building of the new Creative Shropshire Website

Submitted by infosol on Thu, 08/05/2008 - 15:33.

Creative Shropshire recently approached The Web Orchard for a new content management system. I'm going to take you through how we got to where we are today and the reasons behind some of our decisions.

Design

The design process started back in January after Steve Ashdown and myself got the go ahead to redesign from CS site. We already had a good idea of what was needed from a functional point of view but the design was open to interpretation. We knew it wouldn't be easy pleasing our growing member base and to represent what the group is about.

We brainstormed a number of ideas for the design and what we thought was distinctly Shropshire. The ideas of the flowing hills and sheep helped show the more rural side of the county.

CS Site Initial

The initial design played on the rural aspects of Shropshire but lacked the business skills and creativity the group has to offer.

CS Site 2

The second design moved away from our initial ideas and brought in clever uses of members work on the left hand side. Ultimately with the split menu structure the design was deemed impractical.

The ultimate design we decided on bonded the rural aspects with the
historic achievments of the county, Shropshire has a strong business
background being the birth place of industry.

CS Site 3

The site design alters slightly depending on the time of day, any time after 6pm you will see the night time version of the site and after 6am you see the daytime version.

CS Night

Technical

We looked at a couple of different content management systems including Mambo (which the previous site was built on) however it was finally decided to use the open source content management system Drupal. Having a lot of experience with Drupal at The Web Orchard and on my personal site it was the perfect choice for quick development and low cost.

In addition to the core modules, CCK and Views were used for creating custom content types (along with nodeprofile for user profiles). The calendar module was used for the events section TinyMCE was used to give WYSIWYG controls in forms and various other modules provided access control and additional functionality.
